Prof. Akinfolarin’s lecture, titled “Resource Management: A Catalyst for Qualitative and Functional Education,” will examine the pivotal role of resource management in enhancing quality and functional education.

She holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as well as a Master of Education degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management from the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University).

A renowned researcher and accomplished academic, Prof. Akinfolarin has received numerous awards and has published extensively in both local and international journals. Her research works are widely recognised as standard reference materials in the field of Educational Management.

Currently a lecturer in the Department of Educational Management at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, she has also served the university in various administrative and academic capacities.

Convocation Lecture: Prof. Kolawole urges govt’s full intervention to sustain Nigerian Varsities

A renowned political scientist, Prof. Dipo Kolawole, has submitted that part of the yardsticks in sustaining and shaping the future of Nigerian universities is creating learning environments that can stand other global institutions at all levels.

Prof. Kolawole made this submission on Thursday, December 12, 2024, while delivering the Adekunle Ajasin University’s 13th Convocation Lecture, titled, “Global Perspectives, Local Impacts: Shaping the Future of Nigerian Universities,”  held in the University Multipurpose Hall.

Prof. Kolapo, a former Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, noted that governments and proprietors of universities must enhance the welfare of their staff with wages that are comparable to world-class higher institutions, adding that they must vigorously continue to pursue relevance in the global community of universities.

The Professor of Political Science said, “We must vigorously continue to pursue our place and strive for relevance in the global community of universities. This is to be done in pari passu with sustaining the local impacts of the universities. But we must continually be part of the knowledge economy.

“There are some needs for global relevance that are beyond university management. Governments and proprietors of universities must enhance the welfare of their staff with wages that are comparable to global universities, create learning environments that can stand with other global universities in terms of infrastructures learning and teaching aids.

“It is the best teacher who is teaching the best student under the best atmosphere and in the best environment that will produce quality graduates for national development. And for the lecturers, the best talented academics will attract external funds for quality research. The funding agents and funding institutions will only invest in research projects that will benefit them and only talented scholars can do this.”

The Guest Lecturer highlighted, “There are agencies of government saddled with the responsibilities of ensuring quality assurance. The National Universities Commission (NUC) is one of such bodies. It has the statutory responsibility of instituting programmes accreditation to universities. Institutions must provide opportunities for self-actualisation and self-development since a stagnant staff would stifle the growth of the organization.

“Furthermore, the character of the university demands interaction between and among staff of various universities. They must compare notes not only for themselves alone but for the betterment and growth of their organization.”

The scholar also said, “Internationalization is very key to advancement and shaping the future of Nigerian universities. An institution of the 21st century must reach out to other universities in the world. This can be done through partnerships that can produce exchange and linkage programmes. A university that stays in its own cocoon without interaction and relationship with other external to it is only a college.”

Prof. Kolawole acknowledged that in spite of the criticism of its methodology by some scholars, global ranking of universities has put all universities on their toes and in some cases has forced governments and university proprietors to devolve resources to the institutions, regretting that effort had not yet translated to sufficient funding for the universities.

He charged managers of universities to prioritise their meager resources towards increase in high impact research, research output and engagement in international collaborations. He noted that the nation’s varsities must always strive to be part of the global academic ecosystem, saying, “A university is a laboratory of knowledge. Ironically, each can only be able to mine the quantum of knowledge it dispenses to the extent of the available chemicals and reagents available to it.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, had described Convocation Lecture as pivotal platforms for addressing pressing issues of contemporary relevance, offering insights that not only reverberate with the academic community but also contribute to the broader discourse on societal development.

Highlighting the significance of the Lecture, Prof. Ige noted, “Today’s gathering is particularly significant as it provides an opportunity to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education in Nigeria, especially as they relate to global trends and local realities.”

Appreciating the Convocation Lecturer, the VC described Prof. Kolawole as a great scholar with exceptional track records, an individual of great repute whose insights are always broad and impactful.

• Varsity honours Sen. Olajumoke, ex-principal officers, staff, Alumni, others

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, has emphasised the need for genuine commitment to the ideals of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance as essential pillars for building an egalitarian society.

Let our actions reflect teachings from diverse cultural and spiritual traditions, fostering a society where every voice is heard, justice prevails, and leaders serve with integrity.”

Dr. Ajulo described democracy as a governance system that empowers the people through free and fair elections, protection of individual rights, and active citizen participation.

AAUA 25th Anniversary: Gov Aiyedatiwa, Arogbofa, celebrate late Ajasin’s legacies

•We remain resolute in vision and mission of the Varsity – VC

The Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has paid a glowing tribute to the first civilian Governor of the State, the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, for his leadership and dedication to democratic principles.

Aiyedatiwa described the late Ajasin as an epitome of integrity, honesty, selflessness, and excellence who made remarkable contributions to education, politics, and nation-building.

He made the remarks on Monday, 4 November 2025, during the opening ceremony of the first International Conference, held in honour of Chief Ajasin, as part of the University’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Education, Dr. Olawumi Ilawole, Governor Aiyedatiwa addressed the theme of the conference, “Education, Politics, and Nation-Building: A Reflection on the Life and Philosophy of Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin,” emphasising the impact of Ajasin’s life on Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

He noted that his administration would continue to uphold the legacies of Ondo State’s founding fathers.

“We are committed to sustaining these legacies,” the governor stated, adding that his administration has improved teaching and learning across all levels of education. He cited government intervention programmes focusing on human capital and infrastructural development, aiming to enhance education standards and ensure better facilities for students and educators.

The Governor expressed pride in the University’s achievements over the past 25 years, congratulating its management, staff, and alumni for consistently upholding academic excellence and making outstanding contributions to various professional fields.

In his keynote address, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, and elder statesman, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, OFR, spoke passionately about Chief Ajasin’s enduring commitment to free education, a principle he pursued out of genuine belief in the value of education.

Arogbofa emphasised that Ajasin’s free education policy was not a populist move but was rooted in the belief that a sound mind in a sound body was essential for a progressive society.

He noted, according to Chief Ajasin in his memoirs, “The free education at all levels scheme was not designed as a mere populist programme aimed at luring or deceiving the people to vote for us. Rather, it was based on the familiar principle of a sound mind in a sound body.”

He further detailed Chief Ajasin’s pioneering role in education, stating that he was the longest-serving executive connected with free education in Nigeria, first implementing it in the Western Region and later expanding it across all educational levels in Ondo State.

“The Adekunle Ajasin free education policy provided affordable education to millions of Nigerian children at the primary level and to thousands more at the post-secondary and tertiary levels,” Arogbofa stressed.

Beyond education, the elder statesman highlighted Ajasin’s legacy in economic development through industries such as the Okitipupa Oil Palm Industry, Ondo Plywood Industry, Ile-Oluji Cocoa Industry, Ifon Ceramic Industry, Iree Block Industry, Iree-Ekiti, Owena Bank in Akure, and others, which laid the groundwork for industrial growth in the state.

These legacies, he asserted, remain a benchmark for all leaders who aspire to serve with vision and purpose.

The Vice Chancellor of AAUA, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, reaffirmed the University’s dedication to the founding mission of self-reliance and service to humanity.

“Our commitment to first-class research, knowledge creation, character development, and service to humanity remains unwavering,” he said, celebrating the 25th anniversary as a testament to the University’s legacy of academic excellence and societal impact.

Prof. Ige noted the silver jubilee celebration as a significant milestone of a quarter-century of commitment to academic excellence, character building, and societal impact, adding that the celebration was a reflection of the University’s dedication to commemorating its achievements, reflecting on its rich history, and engaging closely with its cherished community.

He revealed that the late Ajasin was a visionary leader whose life and times have impacted many lives in the country. “Named in his honour, our University stands as a testament to his passion for education and his indelible impact on the state and the nation at large. Pa Ajasin was a visionary leader and an ardent advocate of education, believing deeply in its power to shape societies and foster progress.”

The VC, while thanking the Governor, said, “Allow me to offer my sincere gratitude to the Chairman on this occasion, the Visitor to the University, and Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his staunch support and for gracing us with his presence. Your backing of this University and your ongoing support are invaluable to us, and we look forward to even greater strides under your leadership.”

Prof. Ige thanked members of the Local Organising Committee, led by Dr. Olusanya Faboyede, Acting Head of the Department of History and International Studies, for their hard work in organising the event.

The conference featured goodwill messages from representatives of the Ajasin family, including Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose (née Ajasin) and Chief Tokunbo Ajasin, as well as lead paper presentations by Prof. Victor Edo and Dr. N. H. Iwu. Plenary sessions by conference participants followed, offering diverse perspectives on the conference’s theme and Chief Ajasin’s enduring impact on education and governance in Nigeria.

With school bags and essential educational materials distributed to over 120 pupils, the foundation offered a lifeline to families burdened by economic challenges, bringing renewed hope to students of the affected schools.

The event, which was organised to ease the burden faced by parents as schools resumed, amid the current economic hardship in the country, took place at Ijapo Estate Caring Heart Mega Primary School, Ijapo Estate, on Friday, 11 October 2024.

Beauty for Ashes is a non-profit organisation founded by Mr. Akinbolawa and Mrs. Olubunmi Akinbobola, dedicated to providing basic needs and empowerment programmes to underprivileged schoolchildren.

In a similar vein, Beauty for Ashes, in conjunction with The Hope Foundation, awarded scholarships to some indigent students in tertiary institutions, fulfilling its promise to alleviate the financial challenges faced by less privileged university students in their pursuit of academic careers.

In their goodwill messages at the event, the founders expressed profound gratitude to God for the grace to be a blessing to underprivileged schoolchildren in the communities, and for the success of the programme in the Ondo State capital.

The Akinbobolas, represented by Pastor (Mrs.) Christianah Akindunbi, expressed appreciation to the parents, recognising their continuous efforts and sacrifices in supporting their children’s education and ensuring they do not drop out of school.

In her words: “The mission of Beauty for Ashes Foundation is to help these children thrive and reach their full potential, despite the challenges they may face.

“We believe that every child deserves access to food, clothing, and education, and we are committed to making a positive impact in our community.

“With many parents and students grappling with concerns about securing essential educational supplies, this initiative has provided a much-needed lifeline.”

Pastor (Mrs.) Akindunbi, who noted that Beauty for Ashes has been involved in various welfare programmes in Lagos State and its environs, expressed happiness that the foundation extended its hands of fellowship to underprivileged schoolchildren in the Akure and Oba-Ile communities this year.

According to her, they initially expected about 100 beneficiaries, but the turnout exceeded all expectations, showcasing the needs in the communities.

Mrs. Olubunmi Akinbobola, the convener of Beauty for Ashes, is an alumna of Ijapo Primary School, now Ijapo Estate Caring Heart Primary School.

She distributed the Back-to-School packages to beneficiary pupils and students as part of her community service to her alma mater and to underprivileged pupils in secondary, primary, and nursery schools in Akure and Oba-Ile communities.

“Honestly, this is a laudable project, and we thank the family behind this vision for their selfless service to humanity. Everyone knows the high cost of imported school bags and educational materials now.

“I pray that the good Lord will continue to bless the family and the organisation and expand their reach. Like Oliver Twist, we pray that come next year, 2025, our children will once again benefit from their generosity,” she stated.

Beneficiaries were selected based on specific eligibility criteria. They are current pupils and students in nursery, primary, and secondary schools who are less privileged and in dire need of financial assistance for their education.

Schools represented in the distribution included Ijapo Estate Caring Heart Mega Primary School; St. Anthony Araromi Primary School, Akure; Ondo State Special School, Oba-Ile; Brilliant Group of Schools; Best Legacy; God’s Favour; Grace and Favour; Apostolic; Goview; and several others. Secondary school beneficiaries were selected from St. Louis Girls’ Grammar School, Akure; Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Akure; Ijapo Estate High School; Alagbaka High School; Commercial Secondary School, Akure; St. Daniel’s Secondary School; Accord Academy, and others.

The lucky students received a variety of school essentials, including backpacks, mathematical sets, rulers, exercise books, pencils, and other vital provisions.

Earlier, Pastor Hyginus Adebayo, a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, encouraged students to take charge of their destinies during an exhortation.

He emphasised the importance of hard work, seriousness in their studies, avoiding negative influences, and respecting their parents and teachers, assuring them that a bright future awaits those who strive for excellence.

Some beneficiaries, including Godstime Ekpeonyong Offong, a Primary 5 pupil from Ijapo Mega Primary School, and Aluko Divine from Brilliant School, thanked Beauty for Ashes for their kind gesture.

“We appreciate Beauty for Ashes for giving us these educational materials. May the Lord be with them,” they prayed in unison.

Over 120 students and pupils from more than 30 schools, both public and private, including nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Akure and Oba-Ile, benefited from the philanthropic gesture.

Equally, no fewer than 10 undergraduate students benefited from the 2024 scholarships, with financial assistance to cover their tuition fees throughout the duration of their courses at their various institutions.

Highlights of the event included an uplifting musical interlude led by a popular gospel artist, Minister Omowumi Maxwell, among others.
