Ltd, Otunba Ademola Akin-Benson, has rejoiced and congratulated the Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), on the Doctor of Laws (PhD), (Honoris Causa) conferred on him by Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State.

Akin-Benson described the honour done of the Governor as well deserved, adding that the honour bestowed on the Governor was in recognition of his  immense contributions to the development of humanity and the Nigerian society in all areas.

He equally noted with satisfaction the giant strides Akeredolu’s administration has attained in education development in Ondo State.

A congratulatory message personally signed by Akin-Benson also lauded  Governor Akeredolu’s outstanding achievements as a professional lawyer and administrator par excellence.

No fewer than 53 graduands of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo state, made First Class out of a total 5,145 graduating sets of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic sessions.

The 53 First Class students would be among the 5,145 graduating students from various departments of the University, to be awarded Bachelor’s Degrees at the forthcoming 10th and 11th convocation ceremonies of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olugbenga Ige who  disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the activities lined up for the combined convocation ceremonies for 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic sessions, also revealed that of the total 5,145 graduands, 1,511 earned Second Class (Upper Division), 2861 bagged Second Class (Lower Division), 667 had Third Class, while 40, are in the Pass category.

The VC was joined by principal officers and other Senior staff of the university. Prof Ige said the convocation ceremonies which started on Friday, December 3, with Jumat Service, would be rounded off this Saturday, December 11.

The Convocation lecture, titled, “Nature of State, National Ideology and Modelling of Higher Education for Sustaining Development”, will be delivered  on Thursday December 9, by a world-class professor and current President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, Professors Francis Egbokhare, from the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ibadan.

” On Friday, we shall confer First Degree on graduands in Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Institute Education and Institute of Part-Time Programmes. The grand-finale comes up on Saturday,   December 11 when we shall confer First Degrees on graduands in the Facilities of Agriculture, Arts, Law and Science. There will also be conferment of Higher Degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas; Honorary Degree; and Presentation of Prizes”, he added.

A former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria and business magnet, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika will also be conferred with Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

The VC also added that there are 356 graduands receiving postgraduate degrees, 25 of whom are in the Ph.D. category, the highest in the history of the University, saying he is  committed to the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the University.

Prof Ige encouraged the well-to-do individuals and corporate organisations to join in the developmental project, just as he called on the alumni of the institution to continue to work and bring more development to the University.

He added, “Because we have improved on our presence on the Web, especially in terms of the quality of our academic programmes and research, AAUA has been rated the Best State University in Nigeria in last three years consecutively in the annual Webometrics Ranking. Of course, there  is no el-dorado in this for us as we are in a hurry to be the best in Nigeria and take a prominent position globally”.

Speaking on the researchand development activities in the institution, the VC noted that  apart from the Centre for Infectious Diseases Control and Drugs Development which is at the forefront of human capacity development through workshop and training programmes, the University has consistently been conducting training on Application of Bioinformatics Tools in Drug Design, Discovery and Development, among others.

“Several academic staff have stepped up their games in research as some of them recently won grants that will enable them to proffer solutions to societal problems.
“As a corollary of our research efforts, just recently an assemblage of researchers at AAUA was reported to have reached an advanced stage in producing disease and drought-resistant beans and tomatoes, while another group of researchers is on the verge of producing a potent anti-termite solution from a common local plant.

“We have deliberately reinvigorated our Centre for Entrepreneurship Development. The Centre is now more focused on the practical aspect of entrepreneurship. Our students and interested members of the public are being trained on production of various domestic needs, including shoe and belt making, fabrics sewing, nylon and soap production and pastry production.

“The University has not abandoned its promises to support students through the Students’ Support Centre, which administers and oversees scholarships and financial aid to a variety of students, including gifted, indigent, and physically challenged students.

“Under the terms of the agreement, the University will cover half of the school expenses for all physically challenged students, while the best students in each Department with a CGPA in the first-class range will get a scholarship at the end of the academic year.

“Indigent students who are unable to pay their school fees can get a loan for around a third of their expenses. The institution’s Governing Council members made a donation of about five million naira to cater for the students in this category.

“We have also recently reintroduced and engaged students for our Student Work-Study Scheme. The programme permits willing students to work for two hours each day on campus while studying and be paid at the conclusion of each semester. Yet, we have encouraged our students to hone their skills in all ramifications, especially in the areas of innovation, sports, entertainment and artistic performances.

“We are happy that our efforts are yielding good results. Just two months ago, the University Football team, known as the AAUA Luminaries, finished first runners-up nationally in the maiden Higher Institutions Football League. There were also individual wins for our students, including Best Goalkeeper Award and Best Goal of the Competition Award.

“Just recently, Oluwadamilola Akintewe, a female student in the Faculty of Law, was named among the top 10 finalists for the Cheggord Global Student Prize, 2021: a $100,000 award to be given to one exceptional student that has made a real impact on learning and the society.

“The latest innovation by some of our students is the invention of a robotic dog, which is the first of its kind in the entire country. These kind of lofty feats have earned Adekunle Ajasin University the rating of Primus Inter Pares among her peers in Nigeria.

“Today, the University is among the top 10 in Nigeria and one of the best 45 in Africa. It is our desire to bring all students to campus as over 90 per cent of them live off campus. Thus, we have reviewed our Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) policy and made it flexible for individuals, corporate bodies and philanthropists to come build student hostels on our campus.

ODSWMA boss, Rev Adeyemo lauds residents over sanitation compliance

The General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority (ODSWMA), Rev. (Mrs) Ayo Adeyemo, has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by the residents of the state during the November edition of the monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise, despite non restriction of both human and vehicular movements.

Rev. Adeyemo who spoke shortly after leading top officials and other staff of the Authority to monitor the monthly sanitation exercise in some areas within the state capital, also encouraged all the residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily affair.

She explained that today’s Saturday Environmental Sanitation was with no full restriction of human and vehicular movements to honour the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), which is marking its convocation ceremony.

“I’m particularly impressed that today’s exercise recorded high level of compliance. Despite non restriction of movement, the people still complied. The level of compliance was high. People were busy cleaning their environment”, the GM said.

She, however, advised traders at Oja-Oba and residents within the axis to desist from the habit of dumping their waste in the drainages and on the roads but always keep it in prescribed waste bins for easy evacuation.

Rev Adeyemo also warned against burning of refuse, saying it is injurious to human health.

“Drainages are not meant for deposal of waste, drainages are for free flow of water. So, I want to advise the people of this state that they should always keep their environment clean, making sure their environment is healthy and safe.

“All marketers should know, when they close at the end of everyday, they should keep their environment clean. And some people are in the habit of burning their refuse, this is against the law. Burning of refuse is totally against the law and people must desist from it”, she stressed.

The GM charged the people of the state to continue to support and cooperate with the government to further ensure healthier and safer environment for sustainable social and economic development.

AAUA: Students’ protest needless- VC… Says students’ requests granted before violent protest

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has described the recent students’ violent protest that led to vandalisation of some properties of the institution as needless and unfortunate.

Speaking on Thursday at the end of an assessment tour of buildings and other properties that were damaged, the Vice Chancellor said the University Management had acceded to the pleas of Student Union leadership to suspend the “No Registration, No Examination” policy of the Institution before the ugly incident.

Prof Ige said, “It’s really unfortunate. We didn’t expect this level of destruction from our students because ever since this administration came on board, the interest of our students has been very central in our governance structure.

Therefore, this destructive protest is very painful and unexpected. Even if they have the constitutional right to protest, they certainly do not have any right to destroy properties.

“All we did was to ask them to register for their courses, but very few among them went round to destroy properties and disrupt the examination that had already started.

“I also find it difficult to believe that our students could wreak this havoc on the University because we have been very fair to them. There is no request they brought that we did not approve. Though the ‘No Registration, No Examination’ policy was a Council decision, when the Student Union Executives, Student Representative Council, as well as the Presidents of all Faculty and Departmental Associations met with me on Friday to plead for those who were yet to pay, I assured them that we would listen to their pleas.

“By the following Monday, the Registrar issued a circular, allowing all students to write the examinations. And when the examinations began, all the students were allowed in. So, there was no reason for the destruction of properties that we have witnessed. That is why I believe there could be some underlying factors behind the violent protest, and we shall get to the bottom of it.”

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor empathised with members of staff of the University and visitors whose personal properties were damaged, promising that the ‘Management will do the needful very soon’.

The Registrar, Olugbenga Arajulu; Bursar, Tobi Orina; University Librarian, Dr. Oluyemisi Olorunfemi; as well as Deans, Directors, and other senior officers accompanied the Vice Chancellor on the assessment tour.

Timothy Oludare’s killer mustn’t escape justice-Ajulo

Ajulo

#JusticeForTimothy
KAYODE AJULO & CO CASTLE OF LAW.
PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE GRUESOME MURDER OF MR. TIMOTHY OLUDARE
We act as solicitors to the family of the deceased; our Client, whose illustrious son, Mr. Timothy Oludare, was murdered in a cold-blooded manner in his hotel room at Ile-Ife, Osun State and it is on their unequivocal instructions that we issue this statement.
For contextual expediency, it is needful to state that the late Timothy Oludare, a 37-year-old husband and father of three had travelled from Abuja to Ile-Ife, Osun State on the 5th of November, 2021 in furtherance of his Masters of Business Administration studies at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He subsequently checked in at the Hilton and Resorts Hotel owned by Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, the founder of Oduduwa University on the same ill-fated day. He went ‘missing’ for the next two days only for his dead and mutilated body to be found buried in a shallow grave near the hotel.
We welcome with keen interest, the news of the arrest of six suspects linked to the gruesome murder of Mr. Timothy Oludare by men of the Osun State Police Command on the 15th November 2021. Indeed, the preliminary investigation, arrests and findings have nullified the initial apprehension that the deceased must have fallen into the hands of killer herdsmen which if true, could have exacerbated ethnic tensions in Osun State and beyond. While commending the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for these painstaking efforts, we however strongly want to emphasize that it will serve the overriding interest of justice to bring all those involved in this dastardly murder to book. It is worrisome and sad that Mr. Timothy Oludare can be cut down in his prime for motives best known to his killers which of course, must be extracted and investigated by the Police without delay. It portends serious danger that a place meant to serve the temporary accommodation needs of Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike could in actual fact be a place where cold-blooded murders are orchestrated and carried out in the most desperate and daring manner. Again, we note the temerity and the audacity in which the murder of the late Timothy Oludare was carried out as contained in the preliminary findings made by the Osun State Police Command. According to the findings, our Client’s son was strangled to death in his hotel room, his body was subsequently mutilated and wrapped in a blood-soaked blanket/bedsheet belonging to the hotel and finally buried in a shallow grave near the hotel.
The law is clear that an offender(s) who causes the death of a person is guilty of murder under 316 of the Criminal Code Laws Cap 34, Laws of Osun State and same is punishable by death under Section 319 of the same law and it is our legally considered view that the confessional statements as obtained from some of the suspects are cogent enough to establish the varying degrees of guilt of all the suspects.
As things stand, the hotel and its vicinity are a crime scene and should be treated as such, nothing must be on the way of a thorough and wider investigation of this highly reprehensible murder because nobody irrespective of their status or influence is bigger than the extant laws of the land.
We therefore urge utmost professionalism by the Police in this matter; no stone must be left unturned to get to the root of this matter. On our part, we are ready to partner with the Police to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done. While we trust that this matter will reach its expected legal conclusion, we want to reiterate that we will not hesitate for a second to do everything within legally permissible limits to fight anyone who attempts to frustrate the expected end of justice.
As it is historically believed that Ile-Ife is the cradle of the human race, it is important that the ancient city and by extension, other parts of the nation must not be allowed to become safe havens for murderers and other criminals alike. It shreds our collective humanity into pieces when the blood of any innocent Nigerian can be spilled without consequences.
Conclusively, as a firm committed to the promotion of the rule of law and protection of the fundamental rights of all law abiding citizens which include among others, the right to life, we are emphatically restating that the killers of Timothy Oludare must face the full weight of the law.

Be part of our mission for global standard attainment, AAUA VC charges new students… as AAUA matriculates 5,000

Cross section of the students

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has called on the newly admitted students of the institution to contribute to the University’s quest to be the best in Africa by being innovative, studious and disciplined.

Prof. Ige made the call on Thursday at the Matriculation Ceremony for the 2020/2021 academic session held in the University Multi-purpose Hall.

About five thousand new students from eight Faculties and the Postgraduate School took the Matriculation Oath at the ceremony.

He urged them to draw inspiration from various feats of students and graduates of the Institution, including Oluwadamilola Akintewe, a Law student who is among the finalists for the $100,000 Cheggord Global Student prize, and the development of a robotic dog by students of the University.

The VC said, “It is important to mention that Adekunle Ajasin University has become a potent boot camp for grooming confident and globally-competitive graduates who are distinguished in character and learning. In this direction, the previous and recent landmarks of our students and alumni continue to point to the University’s passion for academic excellence, self-reliance, and global impact.

“We cherish these modest achievements and guard them jealously. Indeed, we yearn for more. And we are confident that having admitted you through our merit-driven policy, we have opened the door for achieving more laurels and attaining our aspiration to be the best University in Nigeria, and among the best 10 in Africa.”

The Vice Chancellor warned against anti-social behaviors, saying offenders would be dealt with without fear or favour. He charged them to embrace ‘self-discipline, maintain a decent mode of dressing at all times, shun cultism and examination malpractice, be diligent in your studies, and comport yourself with dignity’.

He also cautioned them on the wrong use of social media, and advised them to approach concerned officers for explanations on grey areas, just as he assured them that the Management has put mechanisms in place to protect them during their studentship.

“Finally, as you officially become members of the University Community through the Matriculation Oath you took today, I advise you to eschew the doomed path of misconduct, criminality, and social vices so that your dreams of becoming responsible citizens and future leaders could be realized. The torch of knowledge we have committed into your hands today must not be blown off”, Prof Ige emphasised.

Earlier, the University Registrar, Mr. Gbenga Arajulu, had administered the Matriculation Oath on the students

42 arrested over environmental offences in Akure

The October edition of the monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise recorded high level of compliance among the residents in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Several residents were seen cleaning and clearing their surroundings, even as human and vehicular movement was restricted.

However, no fewer than 42 persons were arrested at different locations within Akure metropolis over various environmental offences.

The General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority (ODSWMA, Rev’d Mrs Ayo Adeyemo who led other top officials of the Authority to monitor the exercise confirmed this shortly after the sanitation exercise.

She said those arrested were taken to  court for appropriate punishments  in accordance with the law.

Rev’d Adeyemo particularly condemned the situation at  Adebowale junction, Ondo Road, where some people were engaging in buying and selling while others were doing other things contrary to the spirit of the monthly sanitation exercise.

Also, at Ajipowo community where a particular church was holding service during the sanitation hours, the GM warmed that sanitation hours are not meant for church programme but for cleanliness.

She admonished the residents to always respect the laws, do the right things at the right time and cultivate the habit of environmental cleanliness in the interest of all.

Rev’d Adeyemo also cautioned the people against dumping of waste in unauthorised places and locations, saying offenders would be made to face the full weight of the law.

“Please, let us love our state, let us love ourselves and our environment. If you love yourself and your state, you will do things right and keep your environment clean”, she stressed.

While commending the residents for their compliance with the sanitation exercise, the GM equally encouraged them to sustain the tempo to ensure safer and healthier environment across the state.

TIWA SAVAGE: SHAMING THE VICTIM By Thomas-Wilson Ikubese

Ikubese

A few days ago, Tiwa Savage the Nigerian pop singer revealed during an interview with American On Air Personality, Angie Martinez of Power 105.1, that she was being blackmailed by an unknown person who threatened to release a sex tape featuring her and her current lover, except she paid a ransom.
The pop singer however said she’d decided not to pay the blackmailer because characteristically, blackmailers always come back and ask for more.
Seeing that Tiwa was not willing to play games, in the wee hours of 19th October, the blackmailer made good the threat and released the tape online which has since gone viral!
I’ve read myriads of comments of how “disappointed” many people are about Tiwa Savage over the tape.
Many blamed her for having intercourse at all!
Some blamed her for recording herself during the act…
Others nailed her for not ‘settling’ the blackmailer to keep her from this ‘generational’  ridicule.
To my amazement, I’m yet to read a comment that castigates the blackmailer!
Well, maybe I’ve not read wide enough…
Tiwa did what many of us do…had sexual intercourse with her partner. Who the partner was, we have no idea as his face was not on the tape
Did he commit any offence known to LAW? The answer is “no”.
Did he commit any offence known to MORALITY? The answer depends on who is making the analysis.
Perhaps, the nagging question is, “why record yourself during sexual intercourse”?
The obvious answer is “adventure”!
Now, my question to you…
Have you at any time been involved in sexual adventures with your partner?
I’m asking you that is reading this article!
Then…
Suppose those episodes were captured and released to the public by a mischievous being?
Did you just say “impossible”?
Ok, several years ago as an adventurous newly wed, I recorded an intimate moment with my wife, just for the fun of it!
Yes!
You ‘heard’ me right!
So, if my phone had gone missing and a fellow had called for ransome as not to release the tape…and I called off the bluff…and bhooom, my ‘do-the-do’ tape with Àtùpà goes viral!
So, this is how you guys would have castigated me, just because your own private ‘do-the-do’ is not in public glare?
By the way, what would have been the difference between my tape and that of Tiwa?
Perhaps, the major difference would have been that I was doing it with my wife, while she was doing it with an unknown partner, being unmarried at the moment.
And if a religious figure is the one doing the analysis, she would be said to have committed fornication, a position that holds no water in the eyes of a non-religious folk.
This was the reason I stated earlier that the answer to the question of whether Tiwa committed any offence known to MORALITY depends on who is making the analysis.
Just maybe, a lesson that should not be overlooked now, is keeping the cameras off the adventurous space…for thou knowest not where the wind bloweth the images!
However, what is not contentious in this hullabaloo is the LEGALITY thereof.
In the eyes of the law, sharing and posting nude contents is a criminal offence.
Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015 criminalizes leaking and sharing sex tapes.
The right to dignity of human person and privacy that is guaranteed under section 34 and 37 of the Nigerian Constitution has been maliciously violated by whosoever leaked and shared that video.
So, all of you that retweeted that video and took delight in sharing it are as guilty as the one who leaked it originally!
The fellow who called and demanded ransome from Tiwa is guilty of blackmail and should be prosecuted.
The offence of blackmail is created by section 87 of the Crimes Act 1958.
Section 87(3) provides that a person guilty of blackmail is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to level 4 imprisonment (15 years maximum).
Tiwa should make the phone number of the caller available to law enforcement agents who should track, arrest and prosecute the fellow to serve as a deterrent to others
Suffice to say that the homes and businesses of many folks have been ruined by blackmailers in the past and even now, because our society will always blame the victim while the  blackmailer walks freely, in search of the next victim!
This attitude of ours, perhaps unknown to us, is the incentive that has kept blackmailers in their trade.
So, when next you see a victim of blackmail, call for the arrest and prosecution of the blackmailer!
Even if we have to scold the victim eventually, let us toe the line of the Yoruba adage which says, “let’s chase away the hawk first, before coming back to scold the chick that strolls unguided in the open field”!
